Start your year securely Part 3 - Users...

Author: Tom Swift

Hi Everyone,

Tom again, welcome to part 3 of 4 in our series of posts about security!

We have a huge problem in the IT industry in that no matter what we do there will always be that one user! This user will open the zip/exe file within an email. They will find new and inventive ways to destroy your layers upon layers of security, not out of malice, but due to a lack of education. Quite often you can tell this person 5 or 6 times a day that no matter what happens they "should not need to open a file in an email selling THAT!" or "why would you click a link to that site let alone download a file from it!!".

We all know that user and unfortunately so we have to do what we can to help them:

so how do we solve this?

There are two vital things any major company should have:

1) Anti-Virus!

Because as we discussed earlier no matter how solid your defences, that user can (somehow despite not being able to open a word document most days) completely bypass all your hard work and get a virus somehow.

2) Monitoring Software

The problem with anti-virus and firewalls that run on the user's PC is that the user has an uncanny knack of being able to turn them off just before everything goes wrong. The most reliable way to combat this is to alert your IT department when the program in question is stopped.

At Yellowbus we have just been awarded Gold Partner status with ESET who have the most reliable and non-intrusive anti-virus on the market. The intrusiveness of the product is what makes it so successful as users don't feel the need to stop it doing it's job as it doesn't inconvenience them.

The important thing to remember though; is that every company is different and every user within that company is different. While this solution will work for most users a Managed IT Service Provider should always be able to offer bespoke solutions for all users.

Thanks for reading,

Tom
